Olması beklenen eylemler bazen bir koşula bağlı olur. (eğer gidersen..., eğer gördüysen,.. gibi), bu tür cümlelere Köşul Cümleleri - Conditional Sentences denir.
Koşul cümleleri iki cümleden meydana gelir:

a) Koşul cümleciği Conditional clause veya If clause. If you hurry...: eğer acele edersen.
If it rains... : eğer yağmur yağarsa. If you see him... : eğer onu görürsen.

b) Ana cümle : Main clause
You can catch the bus: otobüse yetişebilirsin.

We can't go for a picnic : pikniğe gidemeyiz.

Tell him to come tomorrow : Ona yarın gelmesini söyle.

İşte yukarıda belirttiğimiz If - clause ile Main clause yan yana gelirse Koşul cümleleri = Conditional Sentences oluşur.
Örnekleri yan yana getirip görelim:

If you see him, tell him to come tomorrow. (Eğer onu görürsen yarın gelmesini söyle.)

Koşul cümlesiyle ana cümlenin yerleri değiştiği takdirde anlamda; bir değişiklik olmaz.

Başlıca üç tür koşul cümlesi vardır ve bunların tenselleri farklıdır.

1 — Probable condition (1. tür), bu türde kesinlik vardır.
If you invite me to the party, I'll come. (Eğer beni partiye davet edersen geleceğim.)
2 — Improbable condition (2. tür), bu türde ihtimal -belki- vardır.
If you invited me to the party, I would come. (Eğer beni partiye davet edersen gelirim. )
3 — Impossible condition (3. tür), bu türde-iş işten geçti-anlamı vardır.

If you had invited me to the party, I would have come.
(Eğer beni partiye davet etseydin gelirdim.)Type : Tür Conditional clause

Bu tür cümleler aşağıdaki tense gruplarıyla yapılır :If - Clause Main Clause
The Simple Past Tense + The Simple Future Tense
The Simple Present Tense + The Simple Future Tense
The Simple Present Tense + Imperative
The Simple Present Tense + can/may/must
The Present Perfect Tense + >The Simple Future Tense
will / would / would like + >The Simple Future Tense

(Eğer öğretmen erken gelirse sana yardım edecek.)

If Paul does that exercise again, he will throw the book out of the window.
(Eğer Paul o alıştırmayı gene yaparsa kitabı caımdan atacak.)

If you eat all those green apples, you will be ill.
(Eğer bütün o yeşil elmalan yersen hasta olacaksın.)

If I find your licence, I'll phone you at once.
(Eğer ehliyetim bulursam derhal sana (telefon edeceğim.)

If you don't work hard, you won't be successful.
(Eğer çok çalışmazsan başarılı olmayacaksın.)

If he lends me some money, I'll change my car.
(Eğer o bana biraz borç para verirse arabamı değiştireceğim.)

We'll go without him if he comes after four o'clock.
(Eğer o saat dörtten sonra gelirse onsuz gideceğiz.)

Mehmet will give you some money if you cut the grass.
(Eğer çimi kesersen Mehmet sana biraz para verecek.)

Hiç değişmeyen sonuçları, alışkanlık ve gelenekleri bu tür koşul cümleleriyle anlatırız.

If you heat the wax, it melts.
(Eğer mumu ısıtırsanız erir.)

You get wet if you walk in the rain without an umbrella or a raincoat.
(Eğer yağmurda şemsiyesiz ya da yağmurluksuz yürürseniz ıslanırsınız.)

If he doesn't wear his thick clothes in the cold weather he shivers.
(Eğer soğuk havada kalım giyecek giymezse titrer.)

Oil floats if you pour it on water.
(Eğer yağı suya dökersen - suda - yüzer.)

If - clause : The Simple Present + Main clause : Imperative

If he finishes his homework, take him to the cinema.
(Eğer ödevini bitirirse onu sinemaya götür.)

If you see the doctor, tell him to come here at five.
(Eğer doktoru görürsen saat beşte buraya gelmesini söyle.)

If you think he is drunk, take him to the police station.
(Onun sarhoş olduğunu sanıyorsan onu karakola götür.)

Don't drink cold water if you feel ill.
(Kendini hasta hissediyorsan soğuk su içme.)

Bring your brother if he wants to come.
(Gelmek isterse erkek kardeşini getir.)

If - clause : The Simple Present T. + Main clause: may/can/must

If you feel ill, you may go to bed early tonight.
(Eğer kendini hasta hissediyorsan bu gece erken yatabilirsin.)

If the teacher comes late you may copy the blackboard.
(Eğer öğretmen geç gelirse tahtayı - oradakileri - kopya edebilirsiniz.)

If he works hard today, he can have a holiday tomorrow.
(O eğer bu gün çok çal'şırsa yarın tatil yapabilir.)

If you know Paris, you must know the Eiffel Tower.
(Paris'i biliyorsanız Eyfel Kulesi'ni bilmelisiniz.)

If Ali wants to attend university, he must aply for the entrance exams.
(Eğer Ali üniversiteye gitmek istiyorsa giriş sınavları için başvurmalı.)

If - clause: The Pres. Perf. T. + Main clause : S. Future T.

If Mary has finished her course, she'll return home next week.
(Mary kursunu bitirirse gelecek hafta evine dönecek.)

If you have read it twice, you will "understand it easily.
(Eğer onu iki kez okursan kolaylıkla anlayacaksın.)

If - clause: will / would/would like + Main clause : The S. Future T.

will, would genellikle If - clause'da kullanılmaz. Fakat eğer bir nezaket söz konusu ise kullanılabiir.

If you will wait a moment, I'll call a taxi.
(Eğer - lütfen - -bir saniye beklerseniz bir taksi çağıracağım.)

If you would kindly sit down, I'll make enquiries for you.
(Eğer lütfen oturursanız sizin için soruşturma yaptıracağım.)

If you would like to come, I'll place a room for you.
(Eğer gelmek isterseniz - gelirseniz - sizi bir yere atıyacağım.)

If you would like to come to my office, I'll show you the new models.
(Eğer büroma gelirseniz size yeni modelleri göstereceğim.)
2. Improbable Condition

Bu tür cümlelerde şimdi olması arzu edilen varsayımlar anlatılır. Bunlar aşağıdaki tense gruplarıyla yapılır.If - Clause Main Clause
The Simple Past Tense + would/might/could + should

If you came with me, we might go to the cinema.
(Benimle gelirsen sinemaya gideriz.)

If Erdem used an alarm clock, he would wake up earlier.
(Eğer Erdem çalarsaat kullanırsa daha erken kalkabilir.)

I wouldn't be able to go if my father didn't permit it.
(Eğer babam izin vermezse gidemeyebilirim.)

Mr. Brown might go to the races if he could get away from the office.
(Eğer bürodan çıkabilirse Mr. Brown yarışlara gidebilir.)

If Erdal went to France, he could speak French better.
(Eğer Erdal Fransa'ya giderse Fransızca'yı daha iyi konuşabilir.)

Would you be angry if I used your dictionary?
(Sözlüğünüzü kullanırsam kızar mısınız?)

If they waited for me a few minutes, I could come.
(Eğer beni birkaç dakika beklerlerse gelebilirim.)

Mehmet should join us if his father didn't object.
(Babası itiraz etmezse Mehmet bize katılır.)

If we had enough money we could buy a better house.
(Yeteri kadar paramız olsa daha iyi bir ev alabiliriz.)

If Mary hit the dog, it would bite her.
(Eğer Mary köpeği döverse - köpek - onu ısırır.)

Ayten would succeed if she studied harder.
(Eğer Ayten daha çok çalışırsa başarır.)

If your message came, I might come earlier.
(Eğer haberiniz gelirse ben daha erken gelebilirim.)

Why didn't you do it if you had a dictionary?
(Eğer sözlüğün varsa neden onu yapmıyorsun?)

Flowers wouldn't grow well if I didn't water them twice a week.
(Eğer çiçekleri haftada iki defa sulamazsam iyi yetişmezler.)
3. Impossible Condition

Bu tür cümlelerde geçmişte- ...yapsaydı... olurdu ama... yapmadı... olmadı, gibi) anlamlar vardır.
Bu cümlelerde aşağıdaki tense grupları kullanılır.If - Clause Main Clause
The Past Perfect Tense + would/should/could/might+have

If the manager wanted him, Ahmet would have worked in the office.
(Eğer müdür isteseydi Ahmet büroda çalışacaktı - istemedi, Ahmet de çalışmadı-)

If you had wanted a new pair of shoes, I wouldn't have been able to buy a raincoat.
(Eğer sen bir çift yeni ayakkabı istemiş olsaydın ben bir yağmurluk alamayacaktım.)

Atilla should have run if it had been the last train.
(Eğer o son tren olsaydı Atilla koşardı.)

They might have caught the thief if the children hadn't begun to cry.
(Eğer çocuklar ağlamaya başlamasalardı hırsızı yakalayabilirlerdi.)

Erdal might have enjoyed going to the theatre if he had had a friend with him.
(Eğer yanında bir arkadaşı olsaydı Erdal tiyatroya gitmekten zevk alacaktı.)

If the students had read the play before, they would've understood it better.
(Eğer öğrenciler oyunu daha önceden okumuş olsalardı onu daha iyi anlayacaklardı.)

The mechanic could have repaired the music-set if he had located the fault.
(Eğer usta arızanın yerini saptasaydı müzik setini tamir edebilecekti.)

I should've hidden under the seat if I had met him in the cinema.
(Eğer onunla sinemada karşılaşsaydım koltuğun altına saklanırdım.)

If his friends hadn't helped him doing with difficult work, he wouldn't have finished it.
(Eğer arkadaşları zor işlerin yapımında ona yardım etmemiş olsalardı onu bitirmeyecekti.)

Mary should have come and seen you if she had known you were here.
(Burada olduğunuzu bilseydi Mary gelip sizi görürdü.)

were kelimesinin if cümlelerinde kullanılışı

Koşul cümlelerinde was yerine çoğunlukla were kullanılır. If I were you (=yerinde olsam) bu kullanımda en yaygın olanıdır.

If I were you ...: yerinde olsam...
If I were you I wouldn't let him go out at this time.
(Yerinde olsam onun bu saatte sokağa çıkmasına izin vermem.)

If I were you I would read it again.
(Yerinde olsam onu tekrar okurum.)

If I were you I should pay him now.
(Yerinde olsam ona şimdi öderim.)

If he/she were...

If he were richer he could give you more pocket money.
(Daha zengin olsa sana daha çok harçlık verir.)

If she were cleverer she might succeed in the test.
(Daha akıllı olsa testi başarır.)

If he/she were to...

If she were to come now she would see the show.
(Eğer şimdi gelirse gösteriyi görebilir.)

If he were to pay now he wouldn't come tomorrow.
(Eğer şimdi öderse yarın gelmez.)

Koşul cümlelerinde kullanılan diğer bağlaçlar (conjunctions)

Koşul cümlelerinde If den başka bağlaçlar da kullanılır. Bunları örnekleriyle görelim.

unless: ...medikçe, ...mezse

You won't speak Japanese unless you go to Japan.
(Japonya'ya gitmedikçe Japonca konuşmayacaksın.)

Mehmet shouldn't come unless you come.
(Siz gelmedikçe Mehmet gelmez.)

Ayten wouldn't have written to you unless you had written to her.
(Siz ona yazmadıkça Ayten de size yazmayacaktı.)

whether or not s... ise de,... değilse de

I shall visit the Blue Masque whether you let me or not.
(Bana izin verseniz de vermeseniz de Sultanahmet Camii'ni ziyaret edeceğim.)

We shall go for a picnic whether there is wind or not.
(Rüzgâr olsa da olmasa da pikniğe gideceğiz.)

Suha wants to see the play whether actors act well or bad..
(Oyuncular iyi de kötü de oynasalar Suha piyesi görmek istiyor.)

Even if :.. .sa bile : Even though

Mehmet will use your dictionary even if you don't let him.
(İzin vermeseniz bile Mehmet sizin sözlüğü kullanacak.)

Even though it is rainy Mrs White will go shopping.
(Yağmurlu bile olsa Mrs White alışverişe gidecek.)

They'll watch TV on Sunday even if there is nothing good on.
(İyi hiç birşey olmasa da onlar pazar günü televizyon seyredecekler.)

The pilot will take off even though there is snow on the runway.
(Kalkış pistinde kar olmasına rağmen-olsa da-pilot kalkacak.)

provided (that) : şartıyla, eğer

You can go out provided that you return home before 11.00.
(Saat ll'den önce eve dönmek şartıyla sokağa - dışarı - çıkabilirsin.)

Provided you leave immediately, you can catch the train. (
Şimdi yola çıkmak şartıyla - çıkarsan - trene yetişebilirsin.)

supose (suposing) (that) : farzedelim ki.

Supose she doesn't come in time, shall we leave her here?
(Farzedelim ki vaktinde gelmedi, onu burada mı bırakacağız?)

Supposing Murat failed, who would help him in the summer?
(Farzedelim Murat başaramadı, yazın ona kim yardım eder?)

as if = as though... miş gibi

He spoke as if he knew what he was talking about.
(Ne konuda'konuştuğunu biliyormuş gibi konuştu.)

His face turned white as if he had seen a ghost.
(Hayalet görmüş gibi yüzü bembeyaz oldu.)

if ever : kazara

What shall we do if ever we are out of petrol?
(Benzinimiz kazara biterse ne yapacağız?)

If ever the telephone rings while I'm having my bath, please answer it for me.
(Ben banyo yaparken kazara telefon çalarsa lütfen siz cevap verin.)

in case :... halinde

I'll ring you up in case I'm lost.
(Kaybolmam halinde - kaybolursam - sana telefon ederim.)

You had better be ready in case he comes.
(Onun gelmesi halinde hazır olsanız iyi olur.)

on condition that:... şartıyla

Mary will go dancing on condition that Paul offers her.
(Paul'un teklif etmesi şartiyle Mary dansa gidecek.)

I'll come with you on condition that you bring me back.
(Geri getirmeniz şartıyla sizinle gelirim,)

as/so long as... şartıyle, sürece, takdirde

You can go with John as long as you return home before 11.00.
(Saat onbirden önce eve dönmen şartıyla John'la gidebilirsin.)

He won't be able to write any better compositions so'as long as he doesn't read books.
(O kitap okumadığı sürece daha iyi kompozisyonlar yazamayacak.)

Exercise: Aşağıdaki cümleleri örnekteki gibi a) improbable (2. tür), b) impossible (3. tür) şekline çeviriniz.

If I see her, I'll give her your address.
a) If I saw her, I would give her your address.
b) If I had seen her, I would have given her your address.
1. If you run, the dog will bite you.
2. She'll feel ill if she drinks all that milk.
3. If he finds your watch, he'll ring you up.
4. If I have a secretary, I'll tell her to type my letters.
5. If he has a car, he'll not take you anywhere.
6. If my father comes early, I'll ask him to take us to the cinema.
7. If it doesn't rain, you can go out with your sister.
8. If you don't .buy any petrol now, we'll be out of it on the half way.
9. We'll go out to play if the teacher doesn't come. 10. Robert won't come if he hasn't enough time.

Parantez içindeki fiilleri örnektekiler gibi uygun şekilde kullanınız.

Örnekler:
1. A — If she combed her hair, she (look) prettier. B — If she combed her hair, she would look prettier.
2. A — If the pilot had been more careful, the plane (not) (crash) B — If the pilot had been more careful, the plane would not have crashed.

3. If he (not go) away, I'll send for your father.
4. We'll be late for the cinema if you (not hurry)
5. Unless she works harder she (not succeed)
6. If I saw him drowning I (call) help.

8. If you had some more money, what you (buy) ?
9. Mehmet (visit) you if he had time.
10. Mehmet (visit) you if he had had tüne.
11. If I had slipped, I (fall) 100 metres.
12. We wouldn't have known that you were there if you (not drop) the vase.
13. If I had known that he was tired, I (send) him to bed at once.
14. He wouldn't have closed the window if he (know) that the bird came into the room.
15. If you had added some more salt in the soup, it (taste) better.

7. Will Tom know how to act if he doesn't read that report?
8. What would he have signed if he had agreed the terms? (the contract)
9. What would you have done if your father hadn't been able to send you any money? ((borrow)
10. Where would they stay if they didn't find a room in the hotel? (your house)
