“ ROMEO & JULIET ”
Analyse a character in the play
ROMEO:
Romeo is the son of Lord and Lady Montgue. His name reflects his romantic nature. He is very passionate. His best friends are Benvolio and Mercutio. He is clever and uses witty puns while he is jocking with his friends. While he is talking about Rosaline he is very artificial but whenever he falls in love with Juliet his language becomes simpler. At the begining of the play Romeo is shown self-centered but as the story progresses, he grows up rapidly and becomes a mature character.
When we first meet Romeo in Act 1 , scene 1 he is talking to his friend Benvolio about his unreturned love for Rosaline. He uses lots of oxymorons which reflects his confused mind: “ o loving hate…Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health ”. when Romeo first sees Juliet at the party, he falls in love with her at the first sight. He uses dark and light imagery to describe her beauty: “ It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night…”. Then they suddenly starts to flirt each other.
Shakespeare uses a Chorus at the end of Act 1 which forshadows that their love will be die at the end. Romeo discovers that she is a Capulet and he becomes miserable again. However, he does not give up and he climbs to Juliet’s window in Act 2 ,scene 2. As he speaks to Juliet he does not use poetic language as he makes in Rosaline’s. İn this Balcony scene, his speech turns to a poetic form and he starts to use hyperbolies, extreme metaphore and similies. I think his love for Juliet is real love. At the end of this secne the agree to marry.
In Act 3, scene 1 Romeo shows a great courage and maturity when he objects to fight with Tybalt. Instead of fighting, he tells to Tybalt that he loves him and this shows that he is a man full of love: “ I do protest I never injure thee, but love thee better than thou canst devise…”. Moreover, whn Mercutio fights with Tybalt, Romeo tries to stop them and this shows us that he hates fighting: “ Gentlemen, for shame, forbear this outrage! ”. However, they go on fighting and Mercutio is killed and Romeo’s sensible and rational behaviour is ended. Suddenly, he overcomes with rage and kills Tybalt, this shows us how quickly his emotions can change. Unfortunately, he lets his feelings rule him.
When Romeo learns that he has been banished he becomes uncontrollable in Act 3 , scene 1 and claims that: “ There is no world without Verona walls, but purgatory
torture hell itself, and that banishment is worse than death ” with these line we understand that when Romeo is upset he can not find a practical solutions to his problems just as he makes the same thing in his love for Rosaline. Again we see
that when he is miserable he becomes irrational and his emotions changes quickly. In Act 3, scene 5 Romeo spends his night with Juliet secretly and he becomes more optimistic and mature. The he says that he has to leave otherwise he will be killed.
The final scene of Act 5 , scene 3 shows the depth of Romeo’s love for Juliet. His final speech is full of love, his language is honest and sincere which lacks artificiality : “ O my love, my wife, Death that has suck’d the honey of thy breath, Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty.. Then he commits suicide. He does not die with anger. Besides, he sees hisdeath as a releasing from the bad luck which has poisoned his life. He sees Tybalt’s dead body and asks his forgivenesness this is very kind and a humanist behaviour: “ Tybalt liest thou there in thy bloody sheet?..Forgive my cousin”.
In conclusion, Romeo is a very sensetive , emotional and a moody character but he shows maturity in his love for Juliet. He becomes a strong man and thinks Juliet before himself. At the end of the story, I really sympathise him and think that the couples die because of a feud in which they have played no part . . .
